Unless you want an extra pixel after each group of
three characters,
you'll
need to shift sprites left and right by 8 pixels
rather than 7 to avoid
gaps. Missiles won't help because you won't have time
to
enable/disable
them mid-line.

If someone gets around the 7-pixel character
limitation I'd be interested in using it for Chimera.
Right now I need it for the internal menuing system,
but one of the features we want to have is the ability
for 2600 games to send simple drawing instructions to
Chimera. These could be for character graphics and
plotting/filling sorts of operations. These would be
tied to whatever is deemed the most popular kernel
types for general purpose bitmap graphics. Stellar
Track would be one of them, but also probably Suicide
Mission and a non-flickering 48-char (or 51-char,
however many you can cram on a line).
As it is now, I could have 12 columns of data without
any gaps vertically but with 1-pixel gaps between the
columns so that limits the utility of this mode to
7-bit wide characters with fixed horizontal alignment.
