What Glenn has described so far has always been the "vertical 
blinds" effect used in Suicide Mission and the various text 
based games.... not any bypassing of the TIA, as far as I know.

I'm not sure what methods he may have had in mind for recreating, 
say, Atari 800 Tempest.
