As per http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=88663 the CX80 is
basically two driving controllers i.e. gray code sequence
00<-->01<-->11<-->10<-->00
while the CX22 uses one bit for direction and the other for clock. I think
one (both?) of the trackballs also had a "joystick mode".

As it happens, last weekend I recovered my old Atari Trak-Ball (CX22) from
my parents' storage shed, and I was just about to tell you that I looked at it
carefully and could find *no* switch on it for switching between two modes of
 operation-- but I just looked again, and hidden underneath the lower left
corner *is* a switch for selecting "Joystick" or "Trak Ball" mode. Man, I think
I need to take this thing apart and clean it, oil it, or do whatever you do
to keep it in good working order. I haven't actually tried playing anything
like Millipede with it yet, but it makes a lot of squeaking noises, and
doesn't roll very well in the SW direction.

I also recovered my old Atari Touch Tablet (CX77), which-- if I remember
correctly-- is read just like a pair of paddles? I think it would be cool to
write a paint program for the Atari 2600 that uses the Touch Tablet! :)
