I recently tried one of the latest Stella packages, which came with  
version 1.2.12 of the sdl.dll

Hm... do you have extra Gravis Drivers or just Windows drivers?

Mine says "standardgameport" for the driver and it is using interrupts.

I'm also still running Win98 SE, so that might be part of the problem.

IIRC that was it on Z26, I haven't tried in a couple of years though ;-)

On my recent experiments with Stella it seemed to slow down the Emulator  
to a fraction of it's speed, i.e. when waiting 1-2 minutes I at least get  
to see a directory browser.
