XP has it's own special driver for the Gravis gamepad. So I suppose
the problem must be with Win98. IIRC I had problems with the Gravis
gamepad too, when I last tried the Windows version of z26 on a Win98
computer.

Maybe it's time for you to finally upgrade. There must be XP computers
old enough by now to be considered an acceptable addition to your
office museum. ;-)

Did things get better after that, or did the emulator stay slow when
you started playing games? It might just be a problem with the
initialisation of the joystick handler in SDL.
