[stella] Chimera menu paddle reads

I'm working on traditional paddle reads for the Chimera menu and can't figure out why it's not detecting anything.  Could someone please check this out?  It should run okay on Stella or a Cuttle Cart.

I plucked the paddle reading code from here:

But it doesn't seem to want to run from this context.

It should be setting the background color to a number between 0 and 12 (the row number).
